  • Truthfully, I am not a big fan of multi-vitamin supplements. That being said, I understand that there are some short-term situations where they may be beneficial.

My first recommendation would be to read My Supplement Philosophy.

Then, head over to Fullscript where I have a number of reliable multi-vitamin options called out in the “favorites” section. Keep in mind, with Fullscript, you will receive a special discount as a thank you for being a follower, there are no fees or minimums for your orders, and you get free shipping for any order over $50. You can also shop at Amazon or iHerb but I suggest starting with Fullscript to learn which products are best then, if it’s not from Fullscript, make sure you only purchase from a reputable business with a winning track record for quality and purity.

In lieu of a traditional pill-form multi-vitamin, if there's one thing you could do for your health, it would be to start drinking 1-2 glasses of a stinging nettle infusion every day. Honestly, there is no multi-vitamin that is as complete, powerful, or synergistic as this God-given herb. It is high in vitamins, minerals (including calcium), and, when consumed regularly, supports bone health, reduces inflammation, boosts immunity, improves cardiovascular/digestive/circulatory health, balances blood sugar and hormones.

To learn more about the benefits of stinging nettle, read this study.

You can grow and dry your own easily, if you have a space for them and the time to devote in the harvesting. Since I temporarily don't have a place to have a garden, I buy this brand and have been very pleased with the quality.

To make an infusion, add 1 cup dried nettles to a quart jar. Pour boiling, quality water (such as spring) over top and give it a quick stir with a wooden spoon to make sure every bit is immersed. Cover and let steep on the counter for a minimum of 4 hours and up to 10 (the longer, the stronger). Strain off the tea and keep it in a covered container in the fridge. Add sweetener if desired, to taste, when serving. Compost the spent leaves (it makes an excellent fertilizer for your indoor/outdoor plants).

IMHO, forget buying a multi-vitamin “pill” and start sipping this liquid gold! Cheers!

If you still have questions, contact your favorite FNTP (that’s me!).

  • My latest personal favorite zinc is: the Jarrow formula, Zinc Balance 15 mg capsules. I like it because it has a little bit of copper in it, which can get thrown out of balance if you happen to get too much zinc in your overall diet and/or through crossover supplementing.

Regardless of the brand/preparation you choose, it's best to take it on an empty stomach, if you can tolerate it. If it upsets your digestive tract, you can take it with food so long as there are no phytates in that meal - which are found primarily in nuts, seeds, greens, grains, cereals, etc.

    A good maintenance amount is 15 mg/day

Preventative would be around 25 mg/day

Therapeutic dose would be more along the lines of a minimum of 50mg/day

Provided someone is feeling well, the maintenance dose is a good rule of thumb. If it's the height of cold/flu season or there is direct exposure to others who are not well, preventative is a reasonable level. If someone isn't feeling well, the therapeutic amount may be worth considering.

Keep in mind, the form and formulation of a supplement matters, all of which can affect how it is absorbed - not to mention someone's existing levels, how/when it's taken, and the ability to properly digest and utilize it. You'll find some helpful information that elaborates on it here.

You can shop anywhere but personally, I prefer ordering from Fullscript (that zinc is listed in my "favorites" and also in a few of my protocols found on the dashboard there). Their quality is reliable and their customer service has always been stellar. Besides, readers and clients of mine get an additional discount and every order over $50 has free shipping. Amazon and iHerb are also options for shopping.

This is not a prescription or medical advice. This is for informational purposes only. Please read the Disclaimers page for more information.

  • First, and foremost, it is best to get your Vitamin C through a properly prepared, nutrient-dense, whole-food diet. Why? Because they also contain the co-factors that optimize absorption and it is much harder to overdo as too much supplemented Vitamin C (besides a nasty stomach ache) can cause imbalances in iron and damage tissues.

Foods like organic oranges and lemons (including ingesting some of the peel); raw onions; berries, plums, peppers, and cherries (especially specific varieties); certain greens; and melons, are just a few.

You can also make your own Vitamin C from the peels.

We all know that it can be difficult, especially when traveling or when we’re under the weather and our demand for Vitamin C may be higher than what we are able to access or consume.

There are studies that show that ascorbic acid is beneficial with certain conditions but it is important to be careful with this preparation as it can be harsh on the digestive system. Whole food versions are generally better tolerated but it can take a lot to obtain even just a maintenance dose.

A few brands that I like that are well researched and known for purity are:

    MitoLife’s VITAMIN-C WITH POLYPHENOLS or the RESILIEN-C

    Two tried-and-true brands are:

    ALIVE! brand whole-food Vitamin C

Pure Encapsulations Ester C & Flavonoids

Other versions that may make a good choice for your unique you:

Organic, whole-food preparations - but make sure the companies are reputable and the products are well sourced and known for purity and freshness.

I have also called out a list of Vitamin C products in my “favorites” on Fullscript along with additional information in a helpful protocol, “Vitamin C - So Many Choices”. It is worth checking out this incredible resource for a more comprehensive list of suggestions and other helpful insight. You also get a special discount for being a reader or client. Sign up is free (no membership fees), and shipping for orders over $50 is always free.

As far as how much to take, it is typically best to go to bowel tolerance. This means, take the maximum dose tolerated until stools change. Once BMs become loose or watery, you know you’re getting too much. Back down until your stools normalize. A lower, maintenance dose is fine if you’re just seeking to fill in the gaps of an otherwise nourishing diet.

  • Ordering your own labs is a lot easier than you might think!

You do not need your own doctor or an insurance policy - although some services will accept your doctor’s requisition and many will process your payment through your HSA/HCRA. Most will provide you with the necessary paperwork to file for reimbursement if you do have insurance.

Simply shop each of the companies and select the tests and pricing that best fit your needs. If a test happens to require a doctor’s approval, those companies will either have someone in-house that will authorize (typically automatically) or a Telehealth service designed to facilitate with a brief 1:1 consult. This may/may not involve a nominal fee (sometimes baked in to the pricing) but either scenario is affordable, efficient, and effective. Also, if you don’t know what test you need, you can often use the same Telehealth for guidance!

You will find similarities and differences in each of the services, many of which center around price and availability in your particular area. Some services offer at home kits while others require a visit to a lab near you.

Many of these services are available world-wide and, as mentioned above, some can even be done in the comfort of your own home (e.g., hair sample, finger prick, saliva, urine). Mailings are also very discreet!

Pricing is very competitive from company to company but also as it compares to insurance. What I mean by that is, some will say ‘my insurance covers bloodwork’. It very well may, but do you have a deductible that has to be met first? Regardless, how much do you pay monthly for your insurance plan? Lucky few have full coverage cart blanche, the rest have premiums and other exceptions. To that end, even with insurance, if they don’t approve your test, you have to pay out of pocket or just pass on it altogether.

Customer service with these companies tends to have a very high standard and they aim to be as clear and thorough as possible both through their websites as well as in their written/verbal instructions. Some even offer communicating in your native language (especially helpful if you are outside of the US).

Have I ever used this kind of service before? Yes, I and others in my care have, and it is GREAT! SO convenient, affordable, efficient, professional, and reliable.

I have provided a number of reputable resources under “LABS” on this page. You can also go to my “Order Your Own Labs!” page for a complete list.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact your favorite FNTP (that’s me!) and I will do my best to guide your experience.

  • KATIALIS SOAP - Pack of 2 - Sulfur Zinc Oxide Salicylic Acid Anti Fungal Anti Bacterial Soap is good to have on hand for dermatological issues such as acne, those associated with fungal or parasitic outbreaks, or dermatitis.

Ruby Blue is my go-to for hair, face, and body wash, moisturizer, and conditioner. You can find their line at Fullscript where you also get a special discount for being a reader or client. Sign up is free (no membership fees), and shipping for orders over $50 is always free.

If you have trouble with dandruff, itchy scalp, redness/irritation, or weak/brittle hair, give BLOO a try. It’s all natural, no chemicals or toxic excipients and it’s made in the USA.

I will sometimes use Castile soap but I stick to the purest forms. There are a few brands that have scents but maintain quality however, I find it best to purchase plain soap and add my own essential oils, if the mood strikes.

Once in a while, I will add a drop or two of this quality Vitamin A to my all natural moisturizer. It has helped to keep my complexion glowing!

Simple witch hazel makes a great toner. I just put it in a small spray bottle and spritz as needed. Adding a little rose oil is a nice touch.

Pure, organic Aloe Vera gel makes a great moisturizer that isn’t greasy. It also helps to gently tighten skin as it dries (good for any fine lines or small wrinkles). I sometimes use it as a hair gel - it’s perfect because it’s not heavy and it doesn’t have perfumes or other drying ingredients. It keeps my fine hair hydrated without weighing it down and helps to perk up my curls. For the occasional burn (say, from cooking) or when you’ve had a bit too much sun, this is always helpful to have in the medicine cabinet.

Coconut oil or MCT oil not only moisturize, they’re perfect for makeup removal as well as preventing and treating sunburn. Although some like it for their hair (especially the ends), mine is too fine and the oil is too heavy. I suggest testing a small area first and not when you have to be somewhere so you don’t end up with a greasy look (unless that’s what you were hoping to sport).

In lieu of mascara, using a shea butter stick across the lashes will moisturize them and give a little body. This is great on the days I don’t want a lot of makeup but still want to have a polished finish. I also like to apply it to my eye beds for extra moisture around the delicate tissues.

A soft vegetable brush is a gentle way to exfoliate the skin. I use mine a few times a week and it keeps all of the impurities from building up. You don’t need a lot of pressure - a light hand goes a long way.

I love these wipes for makeup removal and to clean CPAP masks. They have only two ingredients (no junk!) and don’t leave any residue. They are far more economical than any commercial makeup remover cloths or CPAP wipes (which, by the way, are pretty much the same thing just in different packaging and at a higher price point).

I also have some magic makeup remover cloths. These are great for traveling because they are feather light and only need water (no extra products to tote around). Mine come in a little pouch and there’s one for every day of the week. If I’m gone longer than what I have in my pouch, they wash easily by hand with soap and water and air dry in no time.

  • I do wear makeup but I am not consistent in its use. For instance, I can go days without wearing any. Sometimes I only wear a little. Other times, I will get a little fancy and wear more.

Finding makeup that works for me is an ongoing challenge as I have very sensitive skin, certain allergies to common ingredients, and high standards for quality. It can also be ridiculously expensive. I have a hodgepodge of brands - none of which I am married to as I continually try to find a better version.

Because I have no loyalty to one brand and I am always searching for the next best, I won’t list what I have in my kit but would be happy to share what has/hasn’t worked in my experience and answer any questions.

I do suggest you look for the purest, highest quality and try to use organic where practical and applicable.

  • There are a lot of natural salt companies out there, from recognizable brands like Redmond or Kirkland to other, not-so-well-known. Some are reputable and others, not so much. Regardless as to whether you know the manufacturer or not, it may come as a surprise to you that a whopping 90% of sea salt is contaminated. Some of the things I like about Vera Salt is that their product is microplastic free, they test every batch, are sourced from an ancient spring, and harvest by hand using traditional methods. If you are having difficulties finding a particular test, contact me as I may be able to help.

SHOES

It's important to take care of our feet. If you've ever noticed your dogs barking, that means they aren't happy and the rest of you won't be either. The more comfortable and supported they are, the more likely you'll be to get out and get moving. And if they're stylish to boot, you'll also have an extra pep in your step as you show them off!

  • Bur-Mar's Shoes - This family owned and operated store offers high quality clothing, shoes, and accessories. Best part? Excellent customer service and they feature items made in the USA! To make your experience with them even better, they offer a rewards program, a thank you reward for medical employees, and free ground shipping on all orders in the lower 48 (states, that is!). If you're having a hard time finding a size or style, as I was when looking for a certain pair of Dansko's, make sure this is one of the places you call. They were able to help me locate the shoe and I had it on my doorstep in no time!

  • Clarks - These shoes are consistently great quality and always comfortable. While they boast many attractive styles such as sandals, boots, dressy, and loafing around, from my personal experience, I've found they are one of the best places to shop for men and women when it comes to office attire, business travel, or business casual events. They offer points for purchases, free shipping specials (check the site for the latest deal), generous markdowns, free returns, and frequent specials, making it easy to pick up a few pairs at the right price.

  • Crocs - Once you put on a pair of crocs, you'll appreciate why they remain popular despite their reputation as being the "ugly shoe".

Classic crocs are virtually indestructible, rain or shine, and are super convenient to slip on whether you're on a quick jaunt or are in for a long standing haul.

With a surprising range of styles for every age (including babies!) and walk of life, you will understand the benefit of owning at least one pair.

True story - I still have a pair that are over 20 years old and for some time in our household, they were the "community" shoe, as they fit 3 of us at the same time. For all the use and sharing, they look like they haven't aged and are still as comfortable as they were when I acquired them many years ago.

  • Dansko - Some may not realize it but this company is actually based out of Pennsylvania and the original concept was intended to be a barn shoe. The shoes are inspired by the Danish clog platform and are so supportive they are favored by men and women who put in long days of walking and standing. I've had various styles of Dansko shoes over the years, mostly worn for work, but my absolute favorite style they offer are their sandals. I had gotten a cute tangerine colored pair for a trip to Europe and, after putting miles and miles of walking in them without a hint of discomfort whatsoever, I couldn't wait to shop their latest styles and round out my summer shoe collection. These shoes consistently live up to their reputation and I am delighted every opportunity I have to wear them! They offer free shipping and various promotions and even have personalization option for many of their products.ption text goes here

  • EarthRunners - their mission is to “…help recover our connection with nature and reestablish healthy physical and biological functions” and they are constantly striving for perfection. These shoes protect feet while making it possible to reap the benefits of grounding/earthing. They have styles for everyone, including children! Their line is thoughtfully made:

    ☑️ Vegan. No Animal products

☑️ Low impact dyed footbed, GOTS certified

☑️ Secure & free ergonomic laces

☑️ Copper & stainless steel earthing system grounds you to the Earth

☑️ Made with Vibram® outsoles for a responsive sure footed experience

  • Sperry - I have a snappy pair of Sperry boat shoes that always prompt unsolicited complements and I don't even have a boat! From babies to boomers, they are great for kicking around and, like a favorite pair of jeans or that beloved wear-with-everything sweater, go with almost anything. Though a classic fashion statement in their own right, they aren't just for the "preppy" scene. These top siders actually serve a practical purpose as the soles are designed to grip when surfaces are wet. Much like the "community crocs" I mentioned earlier, my husband has a pair of Sperrys that are older than our marriage (that's older some of my clients and readers!) and have been worn by every member in the house - if for nothing else, to take the dog out or grab the mail. The leather on his pair is admittedly well worn but the soles still have many miles to go! Check it out: Sperry loves to celebrate the important contributions of first responders, military, nurses, and teachers, give friends a break, and even give students a leg up by offering special discounts just for them!

SLEEP

Getting a great night's sleep is paramount to health and there are lots of ways to promote it. Having the just the right accoutrements will make the experience as easy as 1...2...Zzzzz!!!

  • Pillow Cube - This unusual head prop is absolutely perfect for those who sleep on their sides. It is instantly comfortable with zero adjustment time. You can even lay on your back when you adjust it down slightly past the base of your cervical spine.

Cons: If you are a stomach sleeper, this one will likely not work for you. As well, if you are looking for a more organic material, the viscoelastic polyurethane that it is made from might not be the best fit.

Still, they have some really clever marketing (theirs is advertising I actually look forward to seeing!) and, if the “cons” don’t apply to you, then this pillow is definitely a winner!

SMOKING TOBACCO, HERBS, NICOTINE, VAPING, & ACCESSORIES

  • For those who are looking for an alternative to tobacco and nicotine, clove cigarettes may be to your liking. This brand is a good introduction to the concept of herbal cigarettes, opening new avenues for exploration.

  • Hestia Tobacco - are you surprised to see cigarettes on a functional nutritional therapy practitioner’s website? Well, don’t be. You may be shocked to hear this but, occasional, supplemental use of quality made tobacco products can be therapeutic.

As so aptly put on their website, “Hestias are proudly manufactured by members of the Seneca Nation in upstate New York. Tobacco is indigenous to the Americas, and has been a part of the history and culture of this land since the dawn of time, and we remain honored to partner with them to continue this legacy of excellence and beauty.”

Hestias uses paper that infuses natural algae substrates into the flax fibers instead of vinyl-acetate used in years past. They’re proudly NOT organic, to allow cover crops and crop rotation (better for tobacco). They also don’t use pesticides or sprayed on chemical fertilizers and there are zero additives.

If you’re going to smoke, smoke Hestias…”naked. wild. tobacco.”

  • For those wishing to reduce the amount of tar and nicotine, tar guards are a helpful tool. These disposable filters can make the experience more pleasant and keeps teeth from staining.

  • Vapes Super Store - #1 online vape retail store and boast excellent customer service. Their products are ethically sourced and strictly tested in the United States. They cut the middle man out to offer the best possible prices while offering weekly promotions. They source favorite brands and, if the don’t have it, tell them, and they will find it for you. The deliver quickly to your door and use discreet packaging.

TOOLS

Whether it is something for your kitchen, a project around the home, a device to support health, or a supply for a hobby, having the right tools can take the stress out of routine chores, make maintaining a healthy lifestyle even easier, and make favored past times even more enjoyable.

  • Jacuzzi Saunas - Infrared saunas are gaining interest as they are a great tool for increasing metabolism, encouraging weight loss, relieving muscle aches and pains along with joint pain and stiffness, improving sleep, detoxing, diminishing the appearance of cellulite, reducing stress and fatigue, improving skin tone, mitigating sun damage, and speeding wound healing. Red light therapy is also purported to reduce the effects of radiation and aid in cancer treatments. But don't take my word for it - remember to think for yourself and do your own research (hint: many great studies are available through the Jacuzzi website). When you do, you will see that this device, with so many proven benefits, will become a favorite go-to, no medicine/no supplement/no food, super easy, affordable way to support health, healing, and well being. One of my favorite things about the Jacuzzi line (besides their reputable quality) is that they are low EMF and low ELF and they have some meaningful upgrade options such as halotherapy and vibrational resonance therapy (VRT). FUN STUFF

The below is the epitome of retail therapy! What is more fun or relaxing than strolling (or in this case, scrolling) through stores that have the most clever, thoughtful, whimsical, artful, but somehow still very useful items? You don't even have to "like" shopping or be a "mall rat" as even the polar opposite of shopaholics appreciate this kind of activity from time to time. It's kind of like going to an art museum packed with useful conversation pieces, and is a great way to de-stress while appreciating creativity and craftsmanship. Who knows, you may even find something for that one person on your list that is just about impossible to buy for! Bonus!!!

  • AnnaBanana Creations - If you’re looking for a fun, functional and unique gift for yourself or a friend, this virtual store is a must shop. You’ll catch yourself laughing out loud at the hilariously clever sayings but it doesn’t end there. You’ll also be so pleased with the quality, craftsmanship, and usability of each piece, not to mention the wonderful customer service. Custom orders are also an option. A scroll through these exceptional products will leave you in a better frame of mind and regular visits are highly recommended. This is the kind of virtual shopping that instantly improves your mood!

HOBBIES & RECREATION

How many of you wish your hobby was your day job? Many do. It can be difficult to find time to do the things we truly enjoy but doing so keeps us grounded, wards off stress, gives us a way to express ourselves and boosts creativity, exercises our minds or bodies (or both!), nurtures relationships, and affords opportunities to grow and share. It's not hard to appreciate that health benefits go hand in hand with these wonderful attributes including lowered blood pressure and cortisol, enhanced mood, and relaxation. Whether it is wood working, music, learning a new language, dancing, the arts, tinkering on an antique car, bird watching, playing pickle ball, or making a craft, all hobbies can be valuable contributors to the vitality of the body, mind, and spirit.

  • Paddletek - If you haven't played pickle ball yet, you are really missing out! It is a wonderful sport and there is no such thing as being too young or too old to play. Truly a sport everyone and every ability level can participate in, you will also be highly likely to meet some super friendly folks. While there are always those in life who are uber competitive in everything they do, the general climate of games, certainly in the beginner and intermediate level, is easy going and supportive. Being fairly new to the Pickle Ball scene, newfound teammates have been generous in sharing their equipment - which has gave me the opportunity to test out a few brands. When it came time to purchase my very own paddle, I was so excited to find a quality product made right here in the good ol' US of A. Paddletek was delightful to work with as their customer service was top notch and the shipping/delivery took no time. They even had a special running at the time of my purchase where they were giving out free drawstring bags. It's the perfect size to tote around my paddle, is lightweight, but well made. This company also offers custom paddles, gear, and sharp attire to fully outfit you for the game.

  • World Music Supply - they've earned the title of your "Online Music Store" for their outstanding values on a broad selection of music equipment from drums to (acoustic, electric, or bass) guitars and amps to recording equipment (or just about anything else!). World Music Supply offers big brands, at competitive prices. What better way to include music into your lifestyle then by plunking on your very own (and very portable) ukulele, picking on a banjo, dj-ing some beats, or rhythmically pounding out your passions on a set of drums?

BUSINESS BUILDING

Whether starting, maintaining, or growing a business, reliable resources with competitive pricing is critical to success. Here are some excellent places to shop for your needs.

  • Alternative Balance Professional Group - When I was looking for insurance for my business, ABPG was hands down theeee number one group that every single professional recommended. I still did my homework and, after studying all of the options, only confirmed what everyone was saying.

Alternative Balance Professional Group has been in business over 25 years offering insurance and business tools for Health, Beauty, and Wellness professionals. They insure over 500 types of industries including fitness instructors, yoga instructors, nutritional consultants, life coaches, health & wellness coaches, massage therapists and many others. Regardless of whether you work in-person or online (live streaming AND pre-recorded videos), their insurance plans will cover your needs. One of my favorite things about this company is their outstanding customer service. They take the stress and guess work out of insurance and set you up for success!

  • Fiverr - This is a great site to visit if you need a logo, spreadsheet, social media or business support, graphic arts, "how-to's", even an administrative assistant. I hired nancyw95 (Nancy) to create some logos for me for an upcoming project and she was absolutely re-mark-a-ble to work with! Wonderful communication skills, kind, and a thoughtful listener, this highly talented artist followed my sketches and accurately applied my feedback so that I walked away with exactly what I was looking for. If you do shop around Fiverr, be selective, read their reviews, and ask a lot of questions up front to make sure you're getting what you want and need. It will help you find a gem like I did. And if you have the pleasure of working with Nancy, tell her I say "hi"!

  • Pixel Power - Small business owners have to wear a lot of hats. With that, we are a jack-of-all-trades but usually only a master of one – the same and only one we went into business for. Many times, as in my case, technology is a tool - definitely not my wheelhouse! When it comes to computers and IT "stuff", you might as well be speaking an alien language that consists of cHaRaKt3rZ & $ymb0l$. It’s simply not easy finding someone who is willing to take the time to thoughtfully explain things in a way that is not only easy for a novice to understand, but also empowers one to become self sufficient (and speaking from hours of YouTube viewing DIY blog reading experience - it only goes so far). However, I have been blessed to connect with Erica Larson at Pixel Power. As I said in my five star Google review, she “…was outstanding - SUCH a nice person and very knowledgeable. She was able to give me just the type of support I was looking to help problem solve my issues and reach my goals and she did it all with great kindness and patience. She also pointed out some very important measures to put into place so that I have a safe and well functioning site. I HIGHLY recommend her and her services!” and I meant every word!!!

  • Staples - I have been incredibly impressed with Staples. Our local store has the best customer service! The staff is highly professional, they always treat me with respect - whether I am professionally dressed or dashing in with a baseball hat and sweats. They have excellent printing services, offer weekly tech deals, quality store brands, and they unreservedly and even voluntarily provide price matching. I get most of my supplies through them and always appreciate their honest and "above and beyond" attitude. It's worth it to check in with them regularly for daily deals and promotions and to sign up for their free rewards program. It is a pleasure shopping with them as they truly do "work as hard as you do".

A little retail therapy is a good thing!
