GREEK SEASONING

Did you know that many commercially pre-made salad dressing packets often contain MSG, wheat, or fillers? Making your own mix is super simple, economical, and you can be assured you aren’t ingesting any aggravating ingredients. Use this seasoning in recipes like Deluxe Lazy Gyro Casserole, Healthy Hummus, Grilled Lamb Chops, Greek Salad Dressing & Marinade, as a dry rub (especially good when paired with balsamic vinegar), or in any dish where you’re looking for a taste of the Middle East. It keeps very well and is a flavorful addition to any spice cabinet.

Yields: Approximately 28 Tablespoons

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: N/A

Skill level: Easy

INGREDIENTS

  • 6 Tablespoons SALT

  • 5 Tablespoons OREGANO

  • 5 – 6 Tablespoons GARLIC POWDER

  • 4 Tablespoons ONION POWDER

  • 1 Tablespoon BLACK PEPPER

  • 2-3 Tablespoons dried PARSLEY

  • 2 Tablespoons CINNAMON

  • 1 Tablespoon NUTMEG

DIRECTIONS

  1. Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

  2. The mixture can be processed in a blender for extra fine texture, if preferred.

NOTES

  • This recipe will double comfortably.

  • In addition to the suggestion above, experiment with adding this to any dish where you’d like a taste of the East.

  • Consider using a specialty salt (such as Vera Salt, Kosher, Grey, Pink Himalayan or Cypriot Flake Salt) or a combination of table salt and specialty salt. Note that some salts – such as grey – can be “saltier” than a regular salt so adjust accordingly.

  • Use Greek Oregano, if available.

  • Fresh dried and ground ingredients (as done in a dehydrator and food processor) are even better, if you have them available. Even if you substitute a few of the spices with homegrown/dried, it will definitely take the quality up a notch!

  • As articulated in the What’s for Dinner article, always aim for the highest quality ingredients.

There was an awesome specialty market where we used to live in Michigan that I mourn its closing to this day. Among the incredible array of foods and spices, they carried a Detroit Greektown Seasoning made by the Detroit Spice Company. I kept the little container and created my own variation inspired by the ingredients listed. This preparation has served me very well over the years and I use it whenever I create recipe that have a Greek or Middle Eastern flair.
